Melrose Arch are excited to announce the launch of their Owl release programme. The project will commence during March 2014.
Between 2-4 owls will be placed in a release box\pen on the Melrose Arch precinct. These will come from rehabilitation centres in and around Johannesburg. In this case, Spotted Eagle Owls (bubo africanus) will be released. The owls will remain in the release box for approximately 20 days. During this period the owls will need to be fed once a day, each owl consumes between 2-3 chicks a day. Feeding is the most important aspect of the owl release and it is imperative that the owls are fed the correct quantity of food every day.
Feeding of the owls must be continued post release. This mimics natural parental care and allows the young owls to hone their hunting and flying skills whilst being able to rely on a stable food supply. This project will utilize the natural circle of life, to create an eco-friendly, and rodent free precinct.
