After a lot of hype in the build up to the launch of the Sensory Theatre, I couldn’t wait to see for myself what it was all about. I was more than excited at the prospect of dressing up, and spending an evening at a theatre in one of Joburg’s most lavish spots– The Venue Melrose Arch. The Venue is a glamorous venue, dimly lit; with numerous floodlights to create a festive atmosphere; it was going to be an electrifying evening.
‘Awaken’ is the blending of fine dining and spectacular entertainment; combined with energetic and professional entertainers, the theatre presented the very best of fine dining in sumptuous surroundings to delight the senses and stun the palate. The meals are served during the show’s interval which means there’s just the right amount of time between courses to not feel bombarded by all the different courses. Awaken is a very interactive show; if you are gutsy – and close enough to the stage – you might even be chosen to bask in the spotlight, if you’re brave enough to give it a go.
Our dining table was a gourmet stage and the Sensory Theatre’s Menu was a sensory overload through a blend of tastes entwined with mesmerising sounds and sights I have never experienced before. The Sensory Theatre’s fine dining experience consisted of a 5 course meal that left my appetite replete whilst being entertained.
For starters, there are several choices, including vegetarian dishes and some game. I had the Bulgar Wheat Risotto – it was incredibly flavoursome. Following the serving of sorbet to cleanse our palettes, I opted for a Beef Fillet – it was prepared impeccably and tasted amazing. Unfortunately, there was no chance of a second helping. For dessert, I chose the Butterscotch & Date Pudding – not an easy choice since choices included desserts with spiced ice cream and decadent aerated chocolate; it was a tough call. But the right choice was made since the Butterscotch and Date pudding was absolutely divine!
Book your tickets to the show for the month of June and you will only pay R600 per person, including dinner. Thereafter, the tickets will be R700 per person. All in all, the evening did more than just stimulate the taste buds; it awakened the rest of the senses too.
