Melrose Arch is pleased to welcome Spitfire Furniture to the precinct. A luxury furniture and décor brand, Spitfire Furniture offers bespoke designer furniture, lighting and décor. Each piece is made by hand using soft Brazilian leather and classy, durable aluminium, resulting in contemporary furniture pieces with an elegant finish.
As the name suggests, Spitfire Furniture specialises in furniture inspired by aviation, but there are also a number of stylish pieces for those who aren’t fans of the aeronautical look. The aviation range features original aircraft parts as well as pieces that are aviation inspired, which include materials such as stainless steel, aluminium and tempered glass for the tables. Each piece shares classic elements of this theme, complementing each other perfectly. Signature pieces include the Tomcat Armchair, Marauder Desk and Banshee Egg Chair, which are manufactured and then imported from Hong Kong. Pieces such as the Jet Engine Boardroom or Dining Room Table, the Aviation Desk, which features an original aircraft wing and the Jet Engine Bar Counter are all made locally from original aircraft parts.
“Spitfire Furniture began in 2013,” explains owner Josh Broome. “Although I would describe myself as a motor head, I have an appreciation for aviation pieces. I do a lot of travelling and on a trip to America, I came across aviation-inspired furniture that really appealed to me. I loved the furniture and there was a gap in the market as there was no one in South Africa producing such pieces.”
“In the beginning, Spitfire Furniture produced a lot of man cave pieces that were very masculine but we have expanded to include a beautiful range of linen sofas, for example, that are softer and more feminine, as well as furniture made from French oak and kiaat, which we manufacture ourselves in Cape Town. We now cater to a wider market, not just aviation fanatics.”
“We also cater to a wider market in terms of pricing, with an affordable range as a point of entry, up to once-off, bespoke pieces for clients,” says Broome. Just as aeroplanes are designed for strength and durability, lasting for decades, Spitfire Furniture pieces are designed to do just that too.
