This social media cause started in 2010,when a Twitter meet-up was organised and everyone was asked to bring blankets for those in need. Only expecting to get a small number of responses, Melanie was blown away when her single tweet went viral, and within two weeks members of the South African Twitter community had donated more than 700 blankets to be distributed to charities.
Protea Hotel Fire & Ice! joined #TBD in 2011, and since then the hotel’s cool GUESTS, visitors and celebrities have contributed to keeping more than 10 000 South Africans warm and dry.
TBD2014 was no different and the worthy charities selected would benefit greatly from all the sponsorships and contributions. Soul Food, which collects and distributes food supplies to 30 shelters in the Witwatersrand region. Seeds of Africa who care for 700 children and Animal Ark Centre also benefitted from this collection.
Friends, GUESTS and suppliers to the hotel gave very generous financial sponsorship to the value of R60 000.00. The hotel then purchased blankets on their behalf. Afriboom, Nomadic, Canon, Designers Ink, The Venue, A Media, Principal Partners, AMDEC, COC, Boo & Airport Media, Melrose Arch Spa, Protea Hotels Nigeria, Tania Malan were all very kind contributors. With over 1600 blankets we were able to warm Jozi before the real cold set in.
Reverend Brent Chalmers was present to collect on behalf of Soul food and four truckloads later allowed them to keep many people warm.
The handover event was hosted in the Milan conference room on the 29 May and an amazing playlist was planned. A blanket or R75.00 to purchase one would get you in. Hot chocolate was on tap, and hearty soups were served to keep you warm. Famous faces such as actress Zakeeya Patel, Comedian Nik Rabinowitz, and performers Tailor, Shadow Club and of course Prime Circle kept everyone entertained.
We doing it again this year. Join us on the 28th of May at Fire and Ice Melrose Arch and help us keep the cold away.
