While Melrose Arch is renowned for its restaurants and shops, it boasts a number of five-star medical facilities that deserve mention too.
As a clinical sexologist, Catriona Boffard is used to raised eyebrows and numerous questions when people hear what she does but she doesn’t mind.
“The field of sex and sexuality is lacking in terms of positive conversation,” says Boffard, who runs a global practice, working mainly from her office in Melrose Arch but also from a practice in London, where she was based for a number of years, as well as online. Although online consultations may seem unusual for sessions, they are run exactly the same as face-to-face consultations and many clients value the sessions as there is more flexibility, for example, for people who travel a lot or aren’t based in the same city as Boffard.
“I offer sex-positive education, guidance and counselling to help people meet their sexual goals and understand themselves sexually. Sex is approached in a non-judgmental, positive way. I help couples understand their patterns of behaviour, communicate more effectively and reconnect intimately on all levels,” she says, adding that she works with individuals, couples and single people who aren’t in a relationship.
Boffard is also a psychotherapist, offering therapy for a number of concerns, including depression, anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder, phobias, panic, stress, grief and trauma, among others.
“I work from a biopsychosocial perspective, assessing and treating clients through an integrative approach that explores the physiological, psychological and social factors behind their concerns,” Boffard explains. “I do not believe that there is a ‘one size fits all’ model when it comes to our mental and sexual health, and so I allow each client’s stories, concerns and goals to shape the course of our therapy.”
JVA Medical Suites was founded by Dr Jannes van Aswegen in 2016, offering a variety of services and treatments for both general healthcare and aesthetic medicine.
“We offer diagnostic medicine, botox injections, intra-dermal fillers, thread lifts, weight loss injections, liposculpting and more,” says Dr van Aswegen, who works with Roger Player and Dr Henri Claassen to accommodate all patients – the sick, as well as those just wanting to tailor their beauty. The JVA team also offers minor surgery and procedures that do not require hospitalisation, such as the excision of skin lesions, intravenous therapy, suturing of lacerations and various other minor procedures, using local anaesthetics. (Minor surgery is the term used to describe any surgical procedure that does not involve general anaesthesia or respiratory assistance during the surgical procedure. It is a medical procedure involving an incision with instruments, performed to repair damage or rid of certain conditions in a living body.) JVA Medical Suites is contracted into most medical aids.

Medi Response, which you’ll find on Melrose Boulevard, runs a 24-hour advanced life support emergency ambulance and medical response operation in central-northern Johannesburg. The operations department provides primary emergency response using ambulances and rapid response vehicles, and is accredited with all medical aids. The team also regularly assists with hospital-to-home transfers when patients require the assistance of ambulance crews to return back home after receiving medical treatment in hospital that makes normal transport by car difficult.
A working knowledge of first aid could mean the difference between life and death, so Medi Response offers comprehensive and accredited training courses to companies and individuals that ensure trainees are equipped to deal with most common life-threatening medical situations such as CPR, wounds and bleeding, head and spinal injuries, asphyxia (suffocation), unconsciousness, epilepsy, burns, diabetes and shock. Medi Response also offers event medical services, event safety management, industrial paramedic personnel and remote site medical services.
The Health Practice at Melrose Arch is an after-hours healthcare centre, founded by Saul Behrmann, Hadley Shapiro and Dr Tracey Brandt. It was opened in response to the lack of after-hours primary healthcare outside the hospital environment.
“The Health Practice was opened to fill the need for after-hours medical healthcare,” explains Saul Behrmann, Practice Manager of The Health Practice. “When people get sick at night or have a minor accident at home, they have to go to their nearest hospital’s casualty department for treatment of a non-emergency ailment, where they can wait for hours before seeing a doctor. At The Health Practice, people can see a GP almost immediately, receive the necessary treatment and even get the medication they need at the same time.”
The Health Practice offers general check-ups, pre-employment medicals, executive medicals, primary healthcare, flu and tetanus vaccinations, immune booster injections and intravenous drips, basic suturing, ECGs, rapid blood glucose testing, rapid cholesterol testing and referrals to specialists. They also run a women’s wellness clinic that offers procedures such as pap smears.
The on-site GP and dispensary are accredited by the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) and The Board of Healthcare Funders of Southern Africa (BHF). The Health Practice charges medical aid rates, with an after-hours levy.
The Health Practice at Melrose Arch is open from Sunday to Thursday from 6.30pm to 10pm.
