“Mom, I’m bored!” is the refrain mothers hate hearing the most, and it’s the one they hear most often during the winter school holidays. But not this year, thanks to Melrose Arch, which will be turned into a children’s playground for a whole month. From 15 July to 13 August, Melrose Arch’s Playground will offer entertainment for girls and boys of all ages.
For children who love adventure and excitement, there’ll be plenty of activity outside on Melrose Arch’s Piazza (next to The Grillhouse) and the Square (between Moyo and Melrose Arch African Pride hotel). From 15-30 July, the Piazza will be home to a bungee trampoline and pedal go-karts. Suitable for everyone aged four and older, and weighing less than 80kg, the bungee trampoline allows adrenaline seekers to jump up to 10m in the air. Securely harnessed, jumpers are then free to show off their skills with acrobatic movements and do flips and other moves they wouldn’t be able to on a regular trampoline. The pedal go-karts are also suitable for people aged four and older, weighing less than 100kg. Safe and easy to use, the go-karts are available in different sizes to accommodate all ages and are pedalled around an inflatable track. Lots of fun and perfect outdoor activities for the warm winter days Joburg has been experiencing!
From 22 July to 11 August, there’s an exciting Nerf zone where kids can play games and eliminate their opponents using Nerf blasters. (Please note the Nerf zone will be available on weekends only.) There will also be jumping castles every day in the Piazza from 15 July to 11 August.
From 28 July to 13 August, kids will be thrilled to find a Radtrax modular pumptrack on the Square, offering hours of fun on wheels. The track is safe, great fun to ride and perfect for youngsters of all ages and skill levels. It’s suitable for practically anything with wheels, from children’s bicycles and BMXes to full-size mountain bikes, as well as skateboards, inline skates and scooters. Children will be able to bring their own bicycles, skateboards, etc or they will be able to hire wheels of their choice at Melrose Arch.
All that activity is bound to work up an appetite so head to one of Melrose Arch’s renowned restaurants for some pasta, pizza or a hamburger. Diners are spoilt for choice – visit JB’s Corner, Jamie’s Italian, RocoMamas, Piza e Vino, Kauai, Tasha’s, Paul Patisserie, Roast Café, Sushi Burrito & Co or The Grillhouse for a delicious lunch, and treat the kids to some Häagen-Dazs afterwards.
After lunch, walk across to the Retail Galleria because the holiday fun continues inside too at the Hollywood Theatre, thanks to children’s stores Artjamming, Blott Stationery and Greenbusters. From 15 July to 13 August, kids can watch a movie in the children’s theatre outside Woolworths in the Middle Retail Galleria, play dress-up, have their photos taken in a tepee, let their inner Picasso out in the arts and crafts area or enjoy a session of Artjamming.
On your way to the Retail Galleria, stop at Slip and Cross, the intersection outside Truworths and Nicci Boutique, where My Little Pony will keep fans entertained for ages. Children can play games with Fluttershy, Applejack, Pinkie Pie and friends, bead their own friendship bracelets and more. (Please note My Little Pony will be available from 15 July to 13 August, weekends only.)
An interactive photobooth in the Upper Retail Galleria will allow parents and kids to capture the fun and share it to social media. A gumball machine will release amazing prizes with every photograph taken.
End the day with a delicious milkshake at the Milkshake Bar at the Protea Hotel Fire and Ice! Melrose Arch. With more than 40 flavours to choose from, including Rocky Road, Oreo, Ferrero Rocher, lemon meringue, butterscotch, toffee apple and fudge, Peppermint Crisp and even pumpkin marshmallow, deciding on one is a challenge. For moms and dads, the alcoholic milkshakes are sublime. Kahlua, banana liqueur, Amarula, Frangelico, apple sour, caramel vodka and tequila are just some of the flavours that make will make parents glad you’re over 18.
Thanks to Melrose Arch, the word ‘bored’ needn’t feature in any child’s vocabulary this school holiday.
* Please note there are charges for the children’s activities.
